Have you seen the headlines?
“International Icon closing its doors in South Africa”
“Job losses as Tupperware shuts SA operations end of December”
“Tupperware Brand files for bankruptcy protection”
“Game is over for bakkies”
A wave of shock rippled through South Africa and the world when in September 2024 it was announced that the iconic plastics company was bankrupt and closing. At the beginning of this month this was confirmed for South Africa and Australia among others. The new owners are keeping the brand alive in several other markets but here in SA we are not so lucky.
Tupperware takes its name from Earl Tupper, a chemist, who invented the first Tupperware container in 1942. Not bad going to have reached 82 years! But what a shock for those who depended on it for either full time work or as a side hussle.
Tupperware became an integral part of what had become a new type of marketing in the second half of the 20th century. They flourished and it seemed inconceivable that the company would fail. However, fail they did, and analysts will be recording the reasons. There are many lessons to be learned and what are the choices for those who choose the Direct Selling method to make some money?
Tupperware, like many other companies was a member of the DSA (Direct Selling Association). The DSA is a watch dog and sets standards for member companies… a good idea to check if your company belongs to them. My company NEOLIFE belongs to the DSA.
Unlike Tupperware NEOLIFE belongs to the Network Marketing option of getting products from manufacturer to customer. Of courses network marketing companies fail too and often! So, make sure when you are looking for an option that you check them out carefully.
Here are some tips that I have found useful:
- Consumables like cleaning products, nutritional products and skin care need to be reordered on a regular basis.
- Check the quality standards of the company.
- Find out who owns the company and what is the plan?
- Check what you receive when joining?
- How is the company keeping up with technological changes?
- Is the marketing plan and commission worth working for?
- Build a NETWORK
NEOLIFE (previously known as GOLDEN PRODUCTS GNLD) ticks all the boxes for me.
The company started in 1958. It is family owned. The future is very bright. The products are second to none. You get your own website on joining amongst other things. And the compensation plan is great with no ceiling provided you work. And finally, the power of your business is in the network of likeminded people that you build.
